Hope & Social - Image

Hope & Social, eight hoodlums who play all-out, ballsy, joyous and uplifting music to win the hearts of many a gig-goer throughout their ten-year tenure as one of the UK’s hardest working bands. Hope and Social gigs are a bewildering mix of chaos and superlative musicianship, built on some of the finest songs you’ll ever hear, and garnished with generous portion of Northern, self deprecating humour. With a 3 piece horn section and 5 part harmonies, Hope and Social make a massive sound that draws influence from soul, indie, folk, disco and art rock. You’ll sing, you’ll dance, you’ll smile so much your face will hurt. Think Dexys. Think The Hold Steady. Think the grooviest, funnest bar band you can imagine!

In March 2022 lead singer Simon was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. After a long year and a half of the best support the NHS can offer and lot of gaffa tape the band are doing their stretches and are ready to make a return to doing what they love best… playing life affirming music in rooms with friends and strangers and sharing a thunderous joy of being together and literally not being dead.

Over the last 13 years the boys in blue have toured extensively around the U.K garnering the praise of many a fan, fans-to-be, and critics on the way. From folk clubs in the deepest south of England to the cavernous Leeds Arena. Yorkshire’s own ‘E-street Band’ are no stranger to the Festival circuit, having chalked up an impressive list of appearances including Greenbelt, Glastonbury, Durham Brass, Yorkshire Festival, Moonbeams, Deershed and Just So Festival. In June 2019 the band supported indie-popsters Embrace at their sold-out homecoming show at the Piece Hall, Halifax.

Hope and Social aren’t just about gigs. As part of their mission to involve people in most everything they do, they’ve completed a huge number of ridiculous projects and events involving dozens, hundreds and now thousands of people in what they do. Check out hopeandsocial.com/projects/ for more details.

HAMILTON LOOMIS

NOVEMBER 16TH     £15

ham_2367

Born and raised in Galveston, Texas, Hamilton Loomis is the son of musician parents who listened to blues, rock and soul. Music ran in his veins and, with instruments readily available around the house, he picked up drums, piano, guitar and harmonica, honing his multi-instrumental talent in addition to performing regularly as part of his family’s doo-wop group.
“My parents had a fantastic record collection and, when I started writing, I gravitated towards what I’d been listening to all my life. I have a huge reverence for the blues and all it encompasses, but I’ve always been fond of R&B and funky music.”
A protégé of Bo Diddley, Loomis met the icon backstage at the age of 16 at Houston’s famed venue Rockefeller’s. Before the night was over, Loomis was onstage playing guitar with the legend. Diddley quickly became friend, mentor, collaborator and supporter, appearing on two of Loomis’ albums and presenting a cherished red guitar that he still plays.
“That one night began my education and I spent a lot of time with Bo over the years listening to him tell so many stories,” said Loomis. “He was so generous and most people don’t know that he was really philanthropic. He played free concerts around his hometown for homeless shelters, schools and anyone that just needed help. He was always giving! That’s another thing that planted the GIVE IT BACK seed in my mind. It’s all coming full circle. ”Loomis and crew shine on stage proving his music is best experienced in person, where one can see and hear its intended splendor. Described by Blues Blast Magazine as “a non-stop turbo of power”, Loomis’ energetic, get-in-with–the-crowd antics are infectious. The swaying and clapping are just as he envisioned.
“Being comfortable on stage is something that comes completely natural to me,” he says. “I feel joy when I play music and it literally moves me. It moves my body. I learned long ago that whenever music is coming from you, from deep inside your soul and from the right place, people will feel that on a deeper level and might not even know what’s going on inside of themselves. I enjoy engaging the crowd and feel a show should be an interactive experience.”

Loomis’ 2013 album “Give It Back” showed his pay-it-forward attitude of passing on knowledge to young, up-and-coming musicians, just as his mentors (notably Houston’s Joe Hughes, Johnny Copeland and rock icon Bo Diddley) once did for him. On his 2017 “Basics” album, Loomis continues the tradition by featuring several of his young protégées, and finishes the record with a jam session by some of his favorite Houston-area youngsters, whose ages range from 12 to 16. Loomis is also on a mission to raise awareness about hyperinsulinism (HI), a rare disease that causes dangerously low blood sugar. His 5-year-old son Bo was diagnosed with the life-threatening condition in 2015, and Loomis dedicates Basics’ opening track, “Sugar Baby,” to Congenital Hyperinsulinism International (www.congenitalhi.org), an organization that heads research on the disease, educates doctors and hospitals, and supports families affected by the disease. “They call HI kids ‘sugar babies,’ so I wanted to write a song in appreciation for all they do for families all over the world,” Loomis says.  His brand new Christmas CD’s title track “This Season”, also inspired by his son Bo, takes the personal subject of his family’s struggle with hyperinsulinism and transforms it into a universal message of hope, faith, and healing.

Founded in Barnsley Rock City in 2006 by their outspoken and energetic ringleader, Scott Doonican, The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican are on a mission! Far from being your typical folk ensemble, this cult-like collective of like-minded knit-wear enthusiasts are determined to follow in their spiritual father’s immortal footsteps and keep his legacy alive. Scott and his brothers-from-other-mothers, Alan, Mo-Jo and Dave, have quite the talent for Bar-Stewardizing other famous people’s songs with new satirical comedy lyrics, on folk instruments, and to complete their outrageously understated image, the Doonicans have become instantly recognisable for their immaculate hair and their stylish choice of sexy knitwear, and instantly memorable for their lairy, no-holds-barred, anarchic live shows.

A group that is both perpetually on the move, ever-evolving and joyously independent, they have played close to 1300 side-splitting shows to date, and have brought smiles and belly-laughs to audiences across the UK; from Barnsley to Barnstaple, from Glastonbury to Glasgow. They continue to wow audiences with a fine selection of their greatest hits, including the likes of “Jump Ararnd”, “The Lady In Greggs”, “How Deep Is Your Glove?”, “Paint ’em Back”, “Goat Yoga”, and “If I Could Punch A Face… It’d Be Justin Bieber’s”.
They have written and recorded eleven studio albums, independently released over 40 live recordings, successfully crowd-funded nine separate independent vinyl releases, played on top of mountains, wowed-festival goers across the length and breadth of the UK, had six different beers brewed and named in their honour by four different breweries (one of which, ‘Doonicans’ is an award winning part of the brewery’s core range of ales), they have sold-out six consecutive shows on a Mississippi paddle-steamer on the Norfolk Broads in less than 20 seconds, hosted their own sell-out music and comedy festivals, written & performed in their own musical, are featured in the Experience Barnsley Museum Music Archives, hold the bar-takings record for at least ten theatres, have been the recipients of six different individual awards as voted for by the public in the Barnsley Music Awards, played the Avalon Stage at Glastonbury Festival, and to 20,000 people at Fairport’s Cropredy Convention (twice!), and even scaled the dizzy heights of a #1 and a #2 single and a #2 album on the iTunes Comedy Charts (plus a National chart position in the Top 100)! That’s not too shabby for a daft little unsigned comedy folk band from Barnsley, who manage themselves, eh?

The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican can’t wait to bring their shindig (and their new line-up) to the Shire Hall, and they promise that they WILL rock you… but gently!

“The greatest thing to come out of Barnsley, since the A61 to Sheffield”
Jarvis Cocker, Pulp

“Always enjoy the boys from The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican. When the North goes independent I am suggesting ‘ Too Good To Be Jus’ is our national anthem. Great fun”
Jason Manford, comedian

“The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican are very, very funny… parodists extraordinaire. One of the hardest working and best live acts on the planet. Bringing light to dark corners and joy to babes and toothless mumblers alike. Lovely stuff.”
Mike Harding, comedian, folk-musician, author & broadcaster

“An act that you will wanna go and see over and over again. Absolutely hilarious”
Dave Pegg, Fairport Convention

” The 8th wonder of the world is actually in Yorkshire… a wonderful Yorkshire genius collective known as The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican. To see them is to know true magnificence”
Kate Rusby, Multi-Award Winning Folk-Musician
