GAELFORCE

FEBRUARY 21st  £15

Gaelforce originated as an idea in the late 1980s, evolving from a popular Yorkshire folk rock band known as Cocky—a name reflecting the region’s term for confidence. Several members of Cocky sought a rockier sound, leading to the formation of Gaelforce, with Chris Dyson on fiddle and mandola, Karen Exley on vocals, David Collins on keyboards, and Roy Whyke on drums. The group was soon joined by bassist and multi-instrumentalist Hugh Bradley from Huddersfield and Barnsley rock guitarist Pete Moreton.
The band also played a number of support concerts for major names, including Lindisfarne and Capercaillie. Their album Stoirm was released on CD in 1994.
In 1997, the band fell apart, as bands sometimes do, which was a real shame as Gaelforce had a growing reputation and a promising future ahead of them.
During the band’s hiatus, Chris became more involved in traditional Irish music, spending part of a decade living part-time in County Mayo, Ireland, and becoming involved with Leeds Comhaltas. After playing in several bands, Chris considered reforming Gaelforce. A chance meeting with former bass player Gary Wells led to the decision to bring the band back.

This marked the beginning of the current iteration of Gaelforce when Chris teamed up with talented rock guitarist Geoff Taylor. Chris and Geoff had seen each other perform before, as Geoff had played for many years with the excellent Leeds-based Duncan McFarland Band. Both had also been regular artists at the Otley Folk Festival during the 1990s, so they were aware of each other’s work. Their collaboration clicked, and the result was their first track together, Back Home in Derry.
Gary Wells, who had rejoined the band as bassist, left shortly after Gaelforce re-formed. In his place, Chris brought in Eddie Green, a former bassist for Oscar the Frog and an old friend. They also discovered drummer Matt Kirton, who had recently moved to Yorkshire from London, where he had played drums in Shane McGowan’s band.

As the new lineup began performing a few pub gigs, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, putting a halt to many aspects of life. Despite this, Chris and guitarist Geoff Taylor continued working remotely. It was during this period that the majority of the album Equinox emerged. Geoff recorded from his home studio, while Chris learned to home-record, adding vocals and fiddle lines to the tracks.
During the pandemic, Chris also composed a significant number of tunes, many of which were recorded and shared on YouTube. These recordings featured Chris on fiddle and bouzouki, all composed, performed, and recorded from home. Here is one of several examples.
At the end of the COVID period, Eddie Green decided to leave Gaelforce and joined the John Palmer Band, while Matt Kirton also departed due to work and family commitments. To fill the vacancy on bass, the band brought in Sam Dowgill, who already played alongside Geoff in the rock band GTO and fit in seamlessly. With Irish roots in his family, it almost seemed like destiny for Sam to join Gaelforce.

The search for a new drummer led them to Jim Brierley, who had recently returned to Yorkshire after spending the past few decades living in Normandy.

This solidified the current core of the band, with Chris Dyson on fiddle and vocals, Geoff Taylor on guitars, Sam Dowgill on bass, and Jim Brierley on drums.

Gaelforce played small pub gigs and a few folk clubs, but the game changer came in January 2023, when they were selected to perform on the Introducing Stage at the Great British Folk Festival in Skegness. The Introducing Stage was effectively a competition, with the winner determined by audience vote. It was a close call even to get started, as each act had only 15 minutes to set up, plug into the PA, and begin playing. For a band as complex as Gaelforce, this was a tall order. With mere seconds to spare, they burst into their opening number without having had any soundcheck.

The audience responded enthusiastically, and Gaelforce won the public vote by a significant majority in front of over 2,000 people. This surreal moment led to festival director Stephen Stanley inviting the band to fill a main stage slot the next day, after another act had dropped out. With a full soundcheck this time, Gaelforce performed to over 2,000 people on the main stage of the festival.

This was a turning point for the band, as they were immediately booked by numerous folk venues, including becoming the first-ever guest artist at the Wetherby Folk Club, where they played a sell-out gig. Gaelforce quickly transitioned from pub gigs to ticketed concerts at small theatres and arts centers, selling out venues across Yorkshire and beyond.

In mid-2023, Chris was approached by an old friend, Craig McIntosh, about the possibility of incorporating Highland bagpipes into Gaelforce’s sound. Playing with bagpipes presented a challenge and a steep learning curve, as they are unlike most conventional instruments in a folk rock band. However, the technical issues were gradually overcome, and the pipes proved to be a hit with audiences, adding a unique dimension to Gaelforce’s performances.
Recently, Craig McIntosh stepped down from Gaelforce due to his many other commitments, including serving as Pipe Major for the Los Angeles Pipe Band in the USA. The band has since brought in Ed Arnold, a well-known piper from Sheffield, whose Scottish roots trace back to his family from Aberdeen.
At the time of writing, Gaelforce is in the final stages of releasing a new album, Solstice, on which both Ed and Craig are featured playing the pipes. Additionally, Chris’s old friend Brian Aylward from Leeds Comhaltas has joined as an extended band member, playing Uilleann pipes and flute for occasional gigs when their regular piper is unavailable.

Next year will see the pairing up of the irrepressible guitar talent of Wales’s very own James Oliver and the bass legend that is Norman Watt Roy (Ian Dury and the Blockheads/Wilko Johnson et al). Fresh from a killer show at the Half Moon in Putney in March, James and Norman alongside drummer, Mark Kemlo, will be fully unleashed to tour across the UK and beyond in 2026.

James Oliver.  guitar and vocals
James Oliver is one of the UK’s busiest acts playing over 300 gigs a year all over the UK, Europe, and the USA!
He has performed over 3000 gigs and shared the stage with many acts including Albert Lee, Bill Kirchen, Deke Leonard, Greg Koch, Walter Trout, Steve Gibbons, Billy Bremner, Geraint Watkins, and many others. In 2020 James won the UK Blues Awards Emerging Artist of the Year and has since been nominated 3 additional times. James Oliver released 2 studio albums 3 live albums and his album Twang was #1 on Amazon Blues Charts for 3 weeks. James is currently working on a new record with legendary producer, John Leckie. James’ YouTube channel has over 20,000 subscribers with over 10 million views.
Norman Watt Roy – bass
Norman kept busy with session work throughout the ’70s, and appeared on such albums as Rachel Sweet’s Fool Around and Nick Lowe’s Jesus of Cool, and Jona Lewie’s number one single “You’ll Always Find Me in the Kitchen at Parties.” He and his brother, along with Turnbull, later joined up with Mick Gallagher (guitar) and Charlie Charles (drums), working under the name Loving Awareness — that outfit, in turn, was engaged for a session with Chaz Jankel and Ian Dury which led to their work on Dury’s New Boots and Panties!! LP, and eventually became the Blockheads, Dury’s band.

They hit the top of the charts in 1979 with “Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick.” Norman Watt-Roy was now one of the most visible bassists working in England. His time with the Blockheads allowed him to cross paths with Dr. Feelgood’s Wilko Johnson, which led to his joining Johnson’s own group in the mid-’80s. In between, he played with the Selecter on Celebrate the Bullet and the Clash on Sandinista!, with Wreckless Eric’s Captains of Industry, and he played the original bass part on Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s single “Relax.” During the 21st century, he has kept busy working with Nick Cave, in addition to his continued performances with Johnson.

THE REVOLUTIONAIRES!

APRIL 18TH   £16.50

BUY TICKETS HERE

Without doubt one of the very best bands ever to have appeared on the Shire Hall stage and they are in some illustrious company believe me…

Established within the ‘hotbed’ of the North East music scene in the UK, they power out jumpin’ hot rhythm & blues in their own indomitable hard hitting style.

Primarily, they are influenced by 1940’s and 1950’s R&B. In particular, Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Roy Brown but have adopted a harder and more aggressive approach, synonymous with modern blues artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Duke Robillard, Jools Holland and Mike Henderson which helps create their own high energy sound.

Over the last decade, The Revolutionaires have established themselves on the UK and European Rockin’ circuit, as well as the Blues scene.

They have toured extensively both in the UK and abroad, performing at festivals in Ireland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Malta and Dubai.

Highlights include performing at festivals with artistes such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Sting, Tom Jones, Hugh Laurie, Jimmie Vaughan, Robert Cray, Walter Trout, Eric Bibb, Albert Lee, Snake Davis and Dave Edmunds.

Now also touring with their Big Band project which consists of extra horns and pianist, The Revs are hitting the Festival circuit with this power house line up and big sound.

They have recorded five CDs to date containing a collection of Hot Rockin’ R&B tracks. Each CD captures the ‘rawness’ and sheer energy of the band, who like to give their performances a ‘hard-edged’ vibe!

If you ‘get yourself down’ to a Revs gig, in the words of the Ronnie Molleen tune .” We’ll be rockin’ up a storm tonight!

PHIL BEER

October 17th 2026    £20

Phil Beer is an award-winning, multi-instrumental musician, singer, and composer, best known as a founder of the folk duo Show of Hands. He is a highly accomplished fiddler and guitarist who also plays mandocello, mandolin, and other instruments. His career includes extensive solo work, tours with bands like The Albion Band and Mike Oldfield, and collaborations with numerous artists, including The Rolling Stones.

‘Phil is one of the most popular ambassadors for acoustic roots music. A dazzling instrumentalist, he is perhaps best known as a top flight fiddler’

The Truth:

Whilst that may be the perception, I would actually take issue with that statement. I didn’t write it.  I’m very good at what I do. The trick is to design what you do in order to accommodate your limitations. Thats why I don’t teach. I leave that to the pros. I’m too busy gigging or making albums anyway. Please stop asking me! The perpetual problem of being a Z list muso/celebrity is how to describe yourself. The most onerous task of all is trying to big yourself up and exaggerate past exploits. I’ve now been ‘on the road’ for 45 years. I’m amazed I’m still standing. I’ve made hundreds of albums with bands/singers/ musicians and done gigs with them. Some are world famous, some you’ve never heard of. The dumbest and most pathetic thing in existence is to see a musicians C. V.  that lists the people that they may just have been with on the same bill on the same day at some festival as people that they’ve ‘worked with’. Whilst I ache in the places I used to play (L Cohen!), I’m still up for what is about to happen, not what has been and gone. Hopefully, myself and my compatriots have more to contribute yet before we shuffle off.

This is why my catchphrase is

Phil Beer. Plays guitar and fiddle, sings a bit. Sums it up…

Founded in Barnsley Rock City in 2006 by their outspoken and energetic ringleader, Scott Doonican, The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican are on a mission! Far from being your typical folk ensemble, this cult-like collective of like-minded knit-wear enthusiasts are determined to follow in their spiritual father’s immortal footsteps and keep his legacy alive. Scott and his brothers-from-other-mothers, Mo-Jo Doonican, Dave Doonican and the Rt. Rev. Jeremiah Rickenbacker Doonican III, have quite the talent for Bar-Stewardizing other famous people’s songs with new satirical comedy lyrics, on folk instruments. 1. Hi Shuan, sadly the malaise that appears to be affecting a lot of live music lately appears to have affected the Bluebells show and we have had to cancel it. All is not lost though, in its place we have Sandra’s Wedding, Tom Kay and Jake Marsden, a cracking triple bill and all for a tenner!
