Sward! – The Story of a Meadow
Commissioned by community arts company Blaize, in conjunction with Highlights Rural Touring Scheme, award winning writer Simon Corble’s Sward! is a magical tale, drawing on ancient myth, oral history and modern science to reveal the complex web of life woven into the fabric of an upland hay meadow.
Suitable for adults and children aged eight and over, the play, directed by Mike Bettison and featuring songs by Jim Woodland, follows the changing face of species-rich hay meadows through the seasons as seen through the eyes of a young farmer and a botany student.
Sward! is brought to life by a talented team whose acting is complemented by screens surrounding the stage that house monitors displaying images of flora and fauna of the meadows. There is also a 50″ flat screen showing fixed point photography taken over a twelve month period and a stunning photographic exhibition by Neville Turner.
“We’re delighted to welcome Blaize to Howden. Sward! is an entertaining play that reaches out to members of our rural community and delivers some powerful messages about the environment and our responsibilities towards it. It appeals to young and old alike and we’re hoping that it will be very popular.”
Tickets cost £8 for adults, £4 for children under 16 yrs, £20 for a family (2 adults and 2 children)
