CHANTEL MACGREGOR

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 26th

….CHANTEL MACGREGOR…. £10

Support from The Steve Fulsham Band

A much requested return for this superb guitarist. See her here while you still can……
Realising at an early age that if you picked up a guitar you got attention, especially from her dad whose guitar it usually was, it was inevitable that she would get one of her own. So at the ripe old age of three, she got her first guitar, a half size acoustic.
At seven she started lessons but soon noticed that not only did the electric guitars have a smaller neck, making them ideal for little hands, but they could also make a lot more noise. After more lessons and a lot more noise, and at the grand old age of eight she became the youngest person in the country to pass a Rockschool grade. More lessons followed and with them came the realisation that if you want people to listen, you need to sing!

So it came to pass that at the age of twelve she arrived at the famous Melborn Hotel in Bradford to play and sing at the weekly jam session. Helped and encouraged by all the musicians, she developed rapidly into a incredible rock and blues musician.

Now described as a “prodigy”, a visit from a major label soon followed and at fourteen she was told “great voice, but girls don’t play guitar like that!”by the head of their A&R. Their advise to change styles because boys would be intimidated was met with an attitude of “that’s their problem! I’m not changing!” Singing and playing on national television and radio soon followed.
Chantel is appearing at the Shire Hall for the third time tonight…This time headlining in her own right!!…If you have seen her before you know you are in for a treat…If you have’nt…You’re in for a treat!!

….FORRO PORRO…. £8

Kiss the winter blues goodbye with Forro Porro, who’ll be bringing their  ever-so-slightly intoxicating cocktail of tropical fiesta music to Howden .
Performing red hot roots styles from South America, “Forro Porro” is the meeting of two of the region’s most popular and accomplished acoustic bands – the duos Mambo Jambo and The Hut People. With backgrounds in Folk, Latin, Pop, Jazz and World music, the four of them joined forces to play the fresh & exuberant sounds of Forro from Northeast Brazil, and Porro & Cumbia from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. To quote the band,
“We just think more people ought to hear this stuff – think of Brazilian barndance or Colombian ceilidh and you’re beginning to get the idea. It’s also a great excuse get onto the dancefloor, and in Latin America they’ll dance all night under the stars to this music.”
Forro Porro have already raised the temperature at top local and national festivals – Beverley and Musicport have already re-booked them – next stop Howden!
Band members are: – Sam Pirt – accordion, vocal; Gary Hammond – timbal drum, berimbau, percussion, voice; Frankie Banham – sax, clarinet, flute, triangle & vocal; Pete Jack – zabumba drum & percussion, guitar, cavaquinho & vocal.
Led by Sam’s award-winning accordion skills and backed by the kind of fiesta rhythms that get under your skin, then migrate to your feet, until you just can’t keep still – though you’re quite welcome to try (!!!) – Forro Porro are definitely one of the East Riding’s musical gems. Come and enjoy them – we say there’s a treat in store.
